What makes an enduring leader?

In the times we live in today, nothing has been called to question more than leadership- both individual and institutional.  Long ago, I learned an important distinction.  Extrinsic leaders take charge by force- physical and mental, fueled by fear and intimidation. These leaders flash shortly and  brightly, but usually leave lasting destruction in their wake, and a legacy of disgrace.

Intrinsic leaders are given authority by those they lead, based on their words and deeds, and often take it reluctantly.  The change and influence they bring to bear can more gradual in its build, but it is enduring and often more dramatic in scale and impact.  The spiritual founders of most all major religions can be found amongst these. Where are these leaders for us today? We sorely need them.
