Share the power

Here are some tips for sharing power in a conversation:

  • Practice active listening. Make sure you are truly hearing the other person instead of just waiting for your turn to talk. Use affirming body language and ask clarifying questions.

  • Don't interrupt or cut people off. Let people finish their thought before responding.

  • Consider your privileges. Be aware of power differentials like gender, race, age, status, etc. that may make it harder for some voices to be heard. Make space for all voices.

  • Don't dominate the conversation. Monitor your air time and cede the floor when appropriate. Draw quieter voices into the dialogue.

  • Ask authentic questions. Seek to understand rather than just make your own point. Listen with an open mind.

  • Don't assume everyone sees it just like you do. Value diverse perspectives and be willing to be challenged or even change your mind.

  • Watch for unintended power plays like aggressive tones, dismissive language, lecturing, etc. Adjust to create more equity.

  • Validate and affirm contributions without judging or critiquing. Build people up.

The key is being aware of the dynamics and doing your part to create opportunities for balanced, mutually meaningful dialogue where all feel heard and respected. It's an art that takes continual effort.
