An Optimist’s Gratitude

I have always considered myself a stoic, emphasizing the positive. Taking this further, when life presents us with challenges that even sway the optimist in us, I’ve moved on to the consideration of gratitude. Gratitude plays an important role in Stoic philosophy. Here are some of the key connections between gratitude and Stoic ideals:

  1. Acceptance of "what is" - Stoics emphasized accepting realities outside of one's control with grace and without complaint. Having an attitude of gratitude enables this mindset rather than railing against the hands of fate.

  2. Appreciation of life's basics - Rather than always seeking more possessions or stimulation, Stoics valued recognizing and appreciating basic life essentials, health, and relationships. Gratitude helps orient us to notice and value these fundamentals.

  3. Tranquility through perspective - By focusing attention on what we appreciate and have rather than what we lack, gratitude helps provide psychological distance from dissatisfactions that disturb our tranquility.

  4. Virtue and character - Thankfulness reflects humility, lacks entitlement or pride, and enables goodwill - virtues Stoics placed as paramount. It builds moral character in alignment with Stoic ideals.

  5. Trust in Providence - Since Stoics often believe that a rational organizing power (Providence) ordered the universe, gratitude is recognition of life unfolding as it should, to serve the greater good.

Practicing heartfelt and thoughtful gratitude is fundamental to cultivating acceptance, wisdom, virtue, and tranquility - essential to living well and flourishing.
